ABOUT OUR LIVESTOCK

Meet our Cows! We have a colorful herd of sweet-natured beef cows (Diamond, Derringer, Lilly, Midge, Red, Rosie, Ruby, Scarlet, and Trixie) and of course the beautiful calves they produce for us each year.  From our stock we raise show cattle that we sell to local 4H & FFA kids looking for a great project and the delicious beef we cook & sell at the market and off the farm.  We use artificial insemination to select the perfect bull to match to our cows in order to maximize the genetics we want to see in our calves.

Meet the Sheep! We have 12 Ewes (Amy, Baabi, BS, Darcy, Denise, Honey, Ivy, Shirley, Tara, Whitney, Vicki, and Victoria), 9 ewe lambs (Bailey, Bree, Gertie, Harper, Rachel, Sam, Vanessa, Venus, & Vixen) and 2 Rams named Homey & Larry. Our ewes are efficient at grazing on our green pastures.  We love the predictability of raising sheep (especially compared to goats) and their hardiness.

Meet our Goats! We have a herd of 14 Boer does (Annie, Blaze, Booty, Ellie, Evie, Ila, Iris, Izzy, Lightning, Lizzo, Tess, Zena, Zoey, and Zuri) and 2 bucks (Frank and Mick). The best part about our goat herd besides the unique personalities of each one of them is that we never have to worry about grazing control as they are very efficient at keeping plants at bay, climbing, & of course asking for attention & treats.

Meet our Chickens (& Ducks)!  We have 40 laying hens and 4 ducks at the farm. Our layers are made of Buff Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds, Isa Browns, Black Sexlinks, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Golden Laced Wyandottes, and Ameraucana breeds and we have Cayuga and Miniature Silver Appleyard ducks. At peak production we will get just over 2 dozens eggs a day. During the summer we will raise between 100-200 Cornish cross broiler chickens in our mobile chicken tractors.

Our Honey Bees!  We maintain between 5 - 10 honey bee hives around the farm throughout the year.  Pollinators are essential to our ecosystem and the delicious honey they create from foraging on our local flora is a bonus to the service they provide to the environment.  Our fascination for the way the colony works as a a single unit reminds us of the goals we set as a family and farm operation.

ABOUT THE FARM

Our 70 acre farm is Michigan Agricultural Environment Assurance Program (MAEAP) verified in Farmstead, Livestock, and Cropping Systems and utilizes 66 solar panels ensuring that we are doing everything we can to provide a sustainable future for many generations. We added a 30' x 60' hoophouse to the farm in 2024, which has allowed us to grow fresh green peppers and tomatoes for our Farm 2 Fork Food Trailer as well as strawberries, spinach, green beans, and veggies to feed us throughout the year.

ABOUT US

Meet the Farmers!  Darin and Megan Emelander, David and Lorna Emelander, and the kids (Macie Merrill and Easton Merrill).  Together we work hard every day as stewards of our land and livestock. Darin is full-time on the farm doing everything from engineering, planning, and managing farm operations; Megan has taught high school agriculture for 22 years and also oversees management, planning, and operations (when not in school); and David and Lorna, both retired, help with all farm operations.  Together we utilize our strengths to make it all possible each and every day.
